Global Warming : How Can I Make My Place More Environmentally Friendly
Hello all, i have so fare done the folowing to lower my co2 output: energy saver light bulbs, reciceling and reusing packaging when posible, ciceling, not leving thing on stand by and only using lighting only when neccesary, i would like to do more with a limited budget, any sugestions would be most apreshiated! ~~~ dolly_wilde ~~~
Global Warming : How Will Mankind Physicaly Evolve To Cope With Global Warming
The planet is getting warmer so surely there will be physical changes to the human race as we naturally evolve to cope with this? What are these changes likely to be though? ~~~ Shirt-n-Tie-Boy ~~~
Global Warming : Who Is Interested In Making The Market Work Better To Reduce Carbon Emissions
The market is already well geared to produce safe products. In the pharmaceutical and other industries, much of the cost may be in just that, ensuring a safe product. One contributer here has said the market will do just that with greener products. But will it do it without incentives and/or penalties and just on customer preferences? ~~~ Robert A ~~~
Global Warming : What Is The Obsession All Of A Sudden By People Telling Me How I Can Reduce My Carbon Footprint
Sorry if this sounds bad but I am so incredibly fed up with upper class people who drive big cars, live in big power-consuming houses telling me all the time about how I should reduce my carbon emissions and mind my carbon footprint. It's almost become a fashion statement which is trendy to follow - is anyone else getting fed up with it or do you think it's great? ~~~ Barca Fan ~~~
Global Warming : How Would You Engage The Local Community In The Benefits Of Sustainable Transport
There are obvious benefits to sustainable travel such as walking and cycling: it's healthy, it's eco-friendly, it's quick (no traffic jams) and it's free! Its important to reduce carbon emissions and leave the car at home. We need to engage the local community - BUT HOW? ~~~ Flex ~~~

Global Warming : How Certain Is It That The Gulf Stream Will Shut Down During Say The Next 20 Years
Also, apart from more extremes in temperature, what are the other likely outcomes? Could it be that the stopping of the Gulf Stream could, overall, decrease global warming, by freezing up the poles more, and so reflecting more sunlight back out into space? What other effects will there be? Thanks, Tim D, that's really informative (and reassuring - I live in England and am aware of how the Gulf Stream moderates our climate. ~~~ LS ~~~

Global Warming : How Or When Will Climate Change Denial Be Overcome
There are countless petty arguments based on complete ignorance filling the internet, but I cannot see any progress being made. What will it take to get everyone on the same side and start acting? Yes, I am on about AGW. I am aware the climate changes, but sun cyles/solar influence and ice age references are truly infuriating. They hold no water yet are wheeled out for these arguments every single time. Has anyone got anything new? ~~~ Adam C ~~~
Global Warming : How Can The Goverment Be Serious About Climate Change Wit Its Mass Immigration Policy
It is known that bringing someone from the third world to here increases the individual carbon footprint on the planet by X 20. Is it not a no-brainer that this is not sustainable. It is a fact reported several times in the press. when people go from a sustainable (although poor) third world to West they go to the Wests lifestyles of housing, heat, cars, throw away society etc. Willy, thancks for your intelligent contribution to the debate. ~~~ trivialsid ~~~
Global Warming : Why Do We Never Hear About Positive Effects Of Climate Change
When reports about global warming/climate change/etc. are mentioned, the slant is always entirely negative. Surely changes of climate will actually be beneficial to some species or environments? I am prepared to accept that climate balance may be changing but I think the media is biased towards saying it is entirely terrible and not giving us any mention of good things that may come of it. Having read some of the answers here, thankyou to those who have answered the question sensibly, and I'd like to point out to those who think there CAN'T be any positive effects you need to think outside the box a little. Example... decrease in polar bears is negative, but increase in "vermin" species IS positive - there is no logic to saying one species is "worth" more than another just because they look cuddly or are currently threatened with extinction. ~~~ quarktard ~~~
Global Warming : The Essence Of A Civilisation Is To Take Necessary And Sufficient Action Against A Threat
This is all those who are concerned about global warming are trying to promote and certainly not to destroy civilisation as we know it? Some restrictions on profligate or otherwise unnecessary emissions of greenhouse gases are surely not too great a burden to be born? Oh dear Dr Jello, cynical on the one hand and insulting on the other. ~~~ Robert A ~~~

Global Warming : Who Thinks That The Now Famous 1940 To 1970 Cooling Period Refutes The Theory Of Global Warming
That is my question, now, I want to show anyone who is interested some additional information to see if this influences anybodyies answer. Here are the 20th C. temperature anomaly graphs from NASA: ./gistemp/graphs/new__ I've seen sceptics use this repeatedly as some kind of proof against global warming. There are some problems with this though; the scientists supporting AGW do attempt to explain this cooling period and do present a plausible explanation that warrants some attention. They propose that aerosol particles can cause the planet to cool by reflecting some sunlight back to space. If you look at when sulfate particle emissions are largest you can see that they peak after the war and begin to reduce in the 70s upon the introduction of legislation designed to curb their emission. Sulfates cause acid rain and respiratory problems, hence the desire to cut down on their emission. This phenomena and its effects are widely discussed in detail in the IPCC report here: .edu/wg1/Report/AR4WG1_Print_ For the most relevant bits look at pages 153 onwards. Page 160 contains the direct information regarding sulfate aerosols. If anyone doesn't want to get bogged down in lots of detail I'd recommend the wikipedia entry on global dimming which also discusses this phenomenom. I'm genuinely interested to see if this information influences anybody's opinion. Does this information make you re-evaluate the claims in the global warming swindle that the 1940-70 cooling period refutes the idea that greenhouse gases caused the warming in the latter part of the century? Or do you still think that the claims in TGGWS, on this point, still hold merit? The cooling impact of sulfate aerosols is fairly well established. Volcanic eruptions lead to large emissions of sulfate aerosols in a relatively short space of time, and if it is a big eruption the sulfate can make its way to the stratosphere (upper atmopshere) where it is much more long lived. The impacts of the Mt. Pinatubo eruption in 1991 were fully observed and the scale of the eruption and subsequent emission of sulfate were enough to fully explain the drop in temperature over the years that followed. Try out these links: .gov/research/briefs/hansen_02/ The sulfate from volcanoes works to cool the atmosphere in the same way as sulfate released from industrial activity (ie. coal burning), yet you accept the volcanoes could cool the planet, yet fail to accept that industrial sulfate could well have have caused the 1940-70 cooling period? This does not make any sense to me. Senseless ad homs against Dr. Hansen really don't cut it either. No substantive criticism and and an ad hom, poor. OK, imprecise description of the facts RE: sulfates on my part, I apologise. The sulfate emissions began to increase after the war and their release peaked towards the end of the 70s. If you look at page 160 of the IPCC 4th report it bears this point out. A further clarification, sulfates emissions were orginally largest in Europe and the USA. I should have made this much clearer. When I spoke of their reduction I was again referring to the EU and USA. There is still an ongoing increase in sulfate emission from China and Asia due to unregulated coal burning. Clearly there a lot of factors affecting the climate. But given that man made sulfates are a known cooling agent and their emission sharply increased in the 1940s I'm interested to hear what evidence people have for not invoking their presence to explain the 1940s-1970s cooling period. Post 1970s there was a sharp increase in the greenhouse gas forcing this seems to have been large enough to eventually overcome the cooling effect of the sulfates. It's a myth that the warming seems to have slowed, at least according the temperature records: ./2007/07/ Ultimate source: NASA. Feel free to download the data and compile this graph for yourselves. ~~~ Paul H ~~~

Does it cost more if you use more electricity and gas, or if you have more cars or a bigger house, or is it roughly the same price in each district?
