Aircraft : What Devices Will Interfere With A Plaines Signal
Please list as many as you can. Please do not put 'etc.' I would like exact results. I need an answer by Friday, June 13. Well, I only need to know what particular electronic devices wouldn't be allowed to like. For example, I know that laptops and cellphones are not allowed, but what about mp3 players or hand held game systems (like a DS)? ~~~ Alana ~~~
Best Answer To Aircraft Question
Any electronic device is capable of interfering with a plane's signal during taxing on the runway, taking off, and landing. When you are at crusing altidute some electronic devices can be used as they no longer produce a threat. These devices include laptops, cellphones (always prohibited), iPods, CD Players, MP3 Players, Discmans, GPS, and anything else that runs on electricty. A DS and an MP3 Player are prohibited when the plane is taxing on the runway, taking off, and landing but may be used at crusing altidute when the pilot turns off the sign.

Answer 1There are lot of signals on a plane (1) AM voice communication (2) GPS (3) Radar transponder (4) loran (5) VOR You really have to specify which signal. In general, you can lose them ALL if you lose power. AM voice communication can be interferred or jammed by another transmitter) - or given they are all forms of radio communication if their antenna are broken, then they would stop working. But again each one has other specific weaknesses, so come back with specific of which signal. Good Luck...
Answer 2EM jammers will do it. probably some solar EM waves like those ones associated with those big solar flares that take out satellites once in awhile also. bad weather will attenuate the ADF needle. an aircraft in front of you on the ILS will cause abit of scalloping. really strong magnets or flying over magnetised ground (in some parts of canada) will make your compass useless. cellphones obviously will make everything go haywire, in fact i'm sure it disconnected my a/p one time but it was an important call. etc.
Answer 3It's just a matter of whether your plane will go down because of something YOU have turned on, or lands with everything intact. It's certainly overkill, but is it worth the chance?
Answer 4Handheld games and MP3 players are allowed. They generally do not want anything that transmits a signal. So, cell phones, 2-way pagers, and the like. That said, I've never had anything screw up by talking on the phone while flying... but, hey, why take the risk. I wouldn't do it in IFR... that said, I wouldn't be distracted by a phone call in IFR either.
Answer 5anything that sends or recieves a satelite signal is prohibited on an airplane... things such as: Cell phones radios anything that has a a remote control iPods, MP3 Players, CD players, Gaming devices (PSP, DS) and such ARE allowed on airplanes as they do not send and/or recieve a satelite signal
