when she is ready to set, she will be still and swell up. Just put a small box in the cage with a hole in it, with straw in the bottom. Also, remove the rail; or, she will drop the egg onto the floor of the cage and break it.

Usually she has made a nest for herself with whatever material is available.. like newspaper lining the cage. IF the eggs are fertile (they will become a blue-gray after about 1-2 weeks of her sitting on them - YELLOW after that same period of time if infertile) PLEASE let her sit until she gets 'bored' with them. Parakeets and Cockatiels can be chronic egg layers, and this depletes their calcium and they can die from this. Good Luck! . Are ya sure you have a boy and a girl? They may not breed until they are 6 months or better and I would guess more likely a year old! If you WANT babies, please read up on this, it's not child's play.. it's hard to be a breeder and you gotta know so much - even if you let the parents raise them and you don't handfeed. Answer 8Parakeets generally don't become pregnant like mammals. However they do carry eggs for a day or so while the egg forms inside them. The hen will have a large swelling behind her legs, just before her vent, or turd hole. Try not to handle her if there's a swelling as the egg may fracture and cause a severe infection. You'll know when she's ready to lay because she'll sit and squat, often closing her eyes and looking uncomfortable. Hens go through contractions when an egg is laid and it's quite a lot of work getting those huge things out! It takes about 24 hours for an egg to form until it can be laid. Sometimes it can takes a bit longer - often as long as 2 days. It takes about 2 to 2 and a half weeks for the eggs to hatch. The hen can lay up to 8 or nine eggs and she'll sit in the nest box while the male feeds her. Don't remove the eggs in any way because the hen will just lay more to replace the old ones.
