Its for little chicks - they aren't hatched yet I'm just planning in advance. But during the day they'll have a heat lamp, and surely they'd get stressed with a 24 hour light? Don't they need darkness to sleep properly? ~~~ Smarty Pants ~~~

yeah ive always used heating pads, wrapped in towels, making sure it doesn't get too hot, only put it on one side of the enclosure so they can move off it, where the food and water is located..ive also hatched chicks with a heating pad, ,haha.

Answer 2Get a water bottle and nuke it, it will give off good heat for a while. You can also heat up rice grains in the microwave in a pillow case, tie up the end, they will do the trick too.
Answer 3Had a look at some chicken breeding equipment suppliers. Looks like they call the equipment for dealing with hatched chickens a 'brooder' This site sells infra red bulbs for brooders so I guess that's what to use /?action=showcategorycatid=29
Answer 4my brother has lizards and we have heat lamps galore. all the lamps are on a timer and they have special bulbs that still give off heat at night, but don't glow or anything. ask the people at the pet store about Sun Glo heat lamp bulbs. they stay on at night, but give a night glow, and still give heat. plus if you get the right lamp, then the bulb can heat up the lamp too to give a better effect of spreading heat. just make sure the birds cant land on it, just in case.
