Best Answer To Boxing Question

technical boxer is a fighter who relies heavily on skill rather than power to win fights, the perfect example of this is gene tunney, he was not the strongest nor the fastest heavyweight, but he relied on smart counter punching and foot work to win fights, another great example is floyd mayweather, his defensive style allows him to avoid getting hit even in tight corners and also allows him to counter attack easily there are several techniques and styles in boxing: the out fighter(the boxer) :these are fighters that fight by hitting without getting hit, they pick their opponents apart from a distance and control the pace of the fight that way, Muhammad ali, larry holmes, gene tunney and willie pep are good examples of this the in fighter: these are usually guys with short reaches and smaller size, they need to get inside their opponent's defense to do damage, they rely more on power and try to ko their opponents most of the time.... rocky marciano is a good example of this as well as mike tyson and joe frazier brawlers: brawlers are in fighters that do not really rely on style or finesse but instead try to knock their opponents out with every chance they get,Marciano is a good example of this as well, he was very much willing to trade punches with opponents and he won a lot of his fights that way, frazier was also somewhat of a brawler as he did not mind getting hit three times just to land one punch. punchers: this is not a style...this is just a type of boxer. these are boxers with good punching power like dempsey, foreman, tyson and shavers. Most great punchers have natural punching power. boxer punchers : in my opinion this is the best type of fighter, because they have the tools to handle just about any kind of competition. a boxer puncher is basically an outfighter with good punching power, they can box from the outside but also have enough ko power to finish fights, lennox lewis and holmes are good examples of this, they were both big guys that fought very well technically, but both possessed enough power to knock people out if they had to. mixed fighters (unorthodox) this is a class that i named because i have noticed some fighters that do not fall into any category, guys like roy jones jr,marvin hagler and evander holyfield were very versatile fighters who could switch between styles and types, roy jones had an unorthodox style of boxing and could do well in almost every circumstance, evander holyfield was the same way, he was technically good enough to be an out fighter/boxer but he had enough power and endurance to mix it up on the inside like a brawler if he chose to, marvin hagler was an extremely talented boxer he could pick you apart from a distance but he often chose to fight from the inside and demolish his opponents like a brawler any of these guys could switch from one type of fighter to another depending on who tey were facing

Answer 1

Out Fighter - Uses Long punches to stay away from opponents punches. usually mostly defensive and not crowd pleasing. example) Floyd Mayweather In Fighter - Gets in close and throws various punches, uppercuts, hooks, short right hands. must have a good chin to support all that punishment when trying to get in close. Example) Miguel Cotto Brawler - Just depends on power to knock out opponent. Usually tend to lack technique, but any punch thrown can knock out oponent. Ricardo Mayorga, Ponce de Leon There are some fighters who excel in all of those but one will always have a weakness. Mike Tyson was a great brawler and In-fighter

You know, this Q could be the premise of a new book. But if you were to boil it down, you'd have 3 types of boxer. Boxer, boxer-puncher, and puncher. You could substitute "slugger" for puncher. But there are probably dozens of discernible styles you could itemize from those 3 basic categories. Technical boxing usually refers to a full set of boxing skills, also including some of the overlooked basics such as moving in and out at angles, getting the gloves back on guard immediately after punching, and never dropping the off hand (dropping the right hand while throwing a left hook). Technical boxers don't pursue a knockout, but work hard and if the opening occurs, they go for it. Otherwise, they pursue a decision and fight with their mind on pacing themselves to go the distance. But basically, ditto what eric just posted.

Answer 4

a boxer will tend to use the hole ring with great foot work rapid flourish of punches and great defensive skills keeping their opponent at long range and lots of jabs to set up openings for better shots where as what they call brawlers tend to keep closer to their opponent using body shots to bring the guard down and open them for the head shots and tend to use upper body movement for defense rather than foot work as they stay nearer to you brawlers are usually big punchers this is not saying that the more skilled fighters are not as powerful this can't be said about Ali, Lewis, Hearns and many other technical fighters so its a bit like Lennox Lewis is your typical boxer where as Tyson is your brawler all boxing is technical there's a tactic behind both styles so there's only one kind of boxing and two types of style
