In the last 23-years Cancun has had "big name" hurricanes during it's season. The last one being in October, three years ago.

VERY likely...if you google the history of hurricanes in Cancun, most hit the island in September/October. Wilma hit in October with major damage to the island in 2005. It has been predicted that 17 hurricanes will hit the island in 2008.

there is always a chance...but considering price diff during off season, worth the risk! i weathered hurricane wilma in cancun a couple years ago and let me tell you, you dont want to do that. but i was impressed how professional and resourceful the people of cancun were... they are real pros in terms of weathering hurricanes.
weather in cancun in sept is hot and humid. some days not a cloud in the sky, some days partly cloudy and you can always count on a quick afternoon shower here and there...but not enough to ruin a day.... unless a hurrican hits, that is.
