First try using a magnet. Sand, like you can find in a playground sandbox, is rarely beach sand. Instead it comes from a quarry and contains all kinds of minerals. Sand is here a technical term for mineral grains of a certains size, not composition. So this sand could very well contain magnetic iron minerals. But most of it is rock, as in silicates and silicondioxide. Extracting metals from those is no picnic. But treat the sand with first water to see if anything dissolves. Next try treating it with strong acid to see if anything "falls off". There could be minerals like carbonates and sulphates in the sand. It is possible to extract metals from those.
