Dancing : What Kinds Of Pointe Shoes Do You Like To Where Tips On Fitting For Dance Store Employee
I just got a job at a dance retail store and am learning to fit pointe shoes. Through dancing on pointe for 3 years I've gained some insight, but I mainly just know what works for me. Does any one have any tips for fitting or could let me know what kind of brand/style works for you and your foot shape? What shoe is your favorite and why? Thanks for your help! ~~~ newdanceteacher ~~~

I wear gaynor mindens (sp?) I love them. They are already broken in so they are much better quality than the cheaper kinds and they last a while so you end up saving money!

Answer 2Hi sweets, fitting pointe shoe sput me through grad school! Let me give you a quick and dirty run through. When the dancer comes in, first size her, and ask some very important questions: -How long is her class -How much of class is at the barre vs. floor -How often she has class -If her studio requires her to use a certain pad -If she will use single or double elastics When she tries them on, especially if its her first pair, put them on her yourself, because she won't understand what she's looking for. Make sure she has the pad in that she plans to use in class. It helps to put the shoe on your lap or have her step into it, then flatten out. Once she has them on, she'll probably complain that they're too tight...which they may not be at all! Have her put one foot into pointe, and pinch the back of the shoe. There should be a slight, and i mean SLIGHT, bit of fabric to grab, no space between the hell and the back of the shoe. Have her hold the wall or a barre, facing it, and stand in first position parallel. Have her CAREFULLY roll up onto pointe. The back of the shoe may pop off, only because they arent sewn yet. Check both shoes for that gap, and take note of how far into the box she goes when she's up. Then have her demi plie in 2nd position. Her toes should be right up to the front of the box while her knees are bent, but not curled over. Her big toe and baby toe should be rgh up against the crown and the sides of the box, but not liftng. That is to say, her toes shouldn't be overlapping. She may feel slight pressure, especially on the baby toes, but as a dancer yourself, you know it softens considerably. If she is aware of the box all around ehr foot but everything is laying flat and compact, its generally a good shoe to start with. As far as fits for certain feet: -wide feet with short toes (like mine...) usually do well with gambas or merlet emprientes. chacot veronese works well, too. -Narrow feet are good with capezio pavlovas and freeds -Gaynors are highly customizable, and everyone loves them cause theyre pretty, but they rarely fit well. you'll know right away if they dont fit your customer. -When in doubt or when you have some priss, try a bloch serenade. Most people are comfortable in them. A big hint, when you get more comfortable with fitting, don't second guess yourself! Youre going to get soem prima donna who insists the shoe doesn't fit and blah blah blah. Just walk into your stock room, stand there for 45 seconds and walk back out with it. 9 times out of 10, it will "miraculously" fit. When you have a good fit, its a good fit, and you'll know it!
