Dogs : How Can I Get My Cavalier King Charles Spaniel To Play With Other Dogs And Be More Fearless
I have a year and a half old Cavalier King Charles that has become extremely shy and nonresponsive to other dogs and people after she turned a year old. She hardly plays with other dogs and always dodges people that are trying to pet her. She used to love attention, be full of curiosity and excitement. Now when i take her to a park full of people and dogs, she'll just sit between my feet and not move. How can i get her to be more social? And, is this normal for her at such a young age? ~~~ ilovemycavalier ~~~
Best Answer To Dogs Question
If a puppy is not socialised well when they are young (between 6-18weeks), they can become very unsocial as they grow become older. I would recommend a dog obedience class for her age group in a controlled environment that she can feel more confident with people and animals and one that is not pushed upon her so she comes out of her shell in her own time. It is important also that you do not say to her "it's OK,you'll be alright", when she is in fear mode as so many people make this mistake and what you are actually doing without realising is rewarding the behaviour. You need to start ignoring her shaking and anxiety. Maybe take some treats with you to the park and when she starts to make very small signs of progress reward her. I cannot tell you though how important it is to get her into a social dog obedience club that will also help her grow her confidence again Good luck

Answer 1Aww, poor baby is scared.. I would start out slowly introducing his to different dogs. the best kind to start with are dogs you know well that are really obedient that will just sit there and let her get curious. Cavaliers are known for being really shy dogs, it may take time. I have work around alot of shy pups, as for people try taking her to places where there is only one or two people at first so she can build up her confidence, a puppy park might be overwhelming

Answer 3Fantastic, what Pinktoni says is spot on and I cannot better it. Great advice from her, please take it!
Answer 4My older Cavalier is exactly like that with other dogs--and has always been (he's now 9 and I got him at six months). I think just like children (who are not all alike), she will warm up with other dogs when she gets the confidence and inclination to do so. Until then, just love her and do what you can to bring out her personality in other respects. Best wishes!
Answer 5I had a Bernese Mtn Dog that did the same thing, here is what "cured" her.... When you take her to the park, ask people to come over and pet her, give them a small treat or a piece of a hot dog and after they pet her/him let them offer a treat as a reward. They do not have to pet the dog for a long time, just touch it. It may take a while, but it worked for me. As far as other dogs, try a dog park, every time she ealks past another dog, give her praise and realy play it up like it is the best thing she has ever done. Above all praise is the best, get your dog excited about doing these things, she will want to please you.
Answer 6I got a boxer that was shy to people and other dogs. I have just worked at having friends give her treats and pet her and bringing other dogs around where she can smell them while they are both on leashes and it has been slow but she is coming out of her shell finally.
Answer 7Hello! It's good that you are so in-tune with your dog! I take my one year old to enclosed dog parks! There she meets other dogs and runs and jumps and plays with them! One of our city's dog parks has an area for each sized dog. Another one of our parks has a small pond where the dogs swim and splash around in the water. the parks have a fence on all sides so dogs can be off their leash without danger of getting hit on the street or getting lost! Good luck!
