Me and a few friends are having a 'not going on holiday this year so lets just pretend' party and to get into the holiday feel we're planning to make cocktails in coconuts. Can you buy half a coconut from any supermarkets? If not then what's the best way to cut it in half? I don't want to end up smashing them into pieces because then we can't drink out of them. I've asked arround and most people propose the old sledge hammer in a tea-towel technique, but obviously for my purpose this isn't going to work. Any ideas? ~~~ Rainbow-Taster ~~~

A saw will work great for this. If you dona€™t mind losing the milk you can just cut it in half (or however else you want it). If you want the milk use an ice-pick or screwdriver and punch two holes in the shell to drain the milk (doing this along the proposed cut line will still allow you to use both halves, and you punch two holes to allow for venting). A ban saw would be perfect, but even a $3 saw from wally world will work (hack saw would be your best non-power option, just have a clean blade). Then just enjoy your party. PS careful when using the saw, losing fingers would not make for a good party I would suggest a hole saw or 1-2inch drill bit in the top beacuse cutting in half will not leave you with much room for a drink (sawing will work too, just only take off the top inch or so)

Answer 3use a drill to gentlycut a circle in the coconut (not all the way through) then, bake the coconut for ficve minutes and gently tap with a hammer after it cools

Answer 11A clean wood saw works just fine. You dont want a fine toothed saw as this clogs up with the coconut flesh. You dont have to drain the milk first as most people cut from top to bottom so when you start the cut and are about 1/4 way through, tip out the milk through the saw cut you have just made. If you drill or pierce the shell to extract milk first then the half with the hole is unusable to drink from. Of course you do have to decide if you truly want half shells - two halves from each coconut or if you want to saw just the top off and have a larger container but only one per coconut. Just make sure the saw is not oily.

Answer 13The only way to do that is how they do it. One swift firm whack with a heavy bladed knife. Once the knife is embedded into the cut hit it with a hammer and it will break, more than likely, in half. Just aim like 1/3 the way from the top. It's not as hard as it seems. Oh yeah, I have seen coconuts sold in half, but the were length wise in half. To make those drink cups it is a horizontal cut. But I have seen plastic coconut cups at Target. Answer 21Having first prepared your cocktails in a big jug chill keep in fridge till ready to use. Drill the three hole marks on top of the coconut shell then empty the milk. With the aid of either a funnel and spare pair of hands you can half fill the coconut shell up with the prepared chilled cocktail. Garnish with sprigs of mint and fancy cocktail umbrellas and staws....what could be more authemtic than the real thing. Better than all the rest.

(10yrs old) Kids bless them, well a hand saw will do the trick but i dont think you can buy them cut already in shops. You see people on telly using some type of axe but they know what they are doing. What ever you decide be very carefull. You would like to keep all your fingers and thumbs. Answer 33I cant recommend this, but, I saw ray Mears get a coconut, turn it on its side (the three eyes facing to right or left) and the striking the coconut hard with the back of his machete and it splits in half. I have a feeling you are going to get through a few coconuts before getting it right. However you could get a drill and using a big bit drill the three eyes. Funnel your drink in and then put straws in one or two of the holes and although it's not quite the same you'll have fun trying to remember you cant rest them on the table/floor etc without spilling them. lol. It hurts the hand holding the nut as the force is transmitted into the holding hand, but you can practice, also turn the nut in the holding hand about a quart turn on every hit. It will break very cleanly after 10 hits and you can break it like an egg over a glass to catch the milk. Very easy when you know how (lol) Good luck!
Answer 39as a sri lankan we often have to open coconuts for food and ceremonies. you must remember to always severe the coconut in the same area and turning so that a line goes down the middle so that it can break in two. you can do this on a corner of a pavement slab - we used the back door away at the coconut and use a knife to get in the middle and push apart. there is a special, machete type knife, curved shape that you are meant to use, so you may have to buy one if all else fails. if not get your local shop keeper to do it..my parents do for customers they like...
