Etiquette. How Does One Determine How Much Cash To Give As A Wedding Gift.

The bride is the daughter of friends, and it is costing us about $1000 to attend the wedding as it is across the country. Thanks to everyone who has answered so far. I had asked the bride's mother if she were registered anywhere, and the reply was that she's hoping for cash to pay for a honeymoon later in the year. I do like the young lady. ~~~ Kilt Newbie ~~~

just give what you can afford .............................they invited you they know how far you have to travel so just your attendance should be the biggest part not the amount of cash you give

Answer 1

Most people give $50 - $200. If you are already paying out $1000 to fly cross country, I think it will be well understood if you gave less.

Answer 2

I would think it would depend on a couple of things- How well do you know them? Obviously pretty well, to fly across the country. Also how well off are you? Once again you appear to have a least some disposable cash or you wouldn't be able to attend. So I think with that in mind, you know what your comfortable with. You do the math!

Answer 3

Wow, you are making a big effort. Etiquette dictates that you must also tender a gift within the first year post-ceremony. Generally, one is usually safe if one estimates the per-guest cost to the bride and groom and their family and doubles this for the first attendee, and breaks the couple even on additional attendees within the same party. This can be scaled up at your discretion, but not scaled down. If it is too expensive, given the expense you have gone to just to get there (impressive effort!), you can always wait a few months before sending the gift.

Answer 4

maybe $300

Answer 5

give what you can afford

Answer 6

It depends upon your relation with the other party. Sometimes there are customs in your ways and sometimes you have to decide after keeping in view your own monetary position.

Answer 7

One looks at the balance of one's bank account. Check where the bride is registered and buy something you can comfortably afford. If you feel like being extravagant, buy them a tank of gas!

Answer 8

just give what you can afford .............................they invited you they know how far you have to travel so just your attendance should be the biggest part not the amount of cash you give

Answer 9

The trip alone is costing you a heck of a lot. So, if you consider that the bride is "just the daughter of friends", I suggest you look at your check book balance and determine what you can afford to give.

Answer 10

You give what you feel good about. That is a lot to attend and I'm sure they appreciate you making the effort and being there. If you want to give $50 then that's great. If you want to give $100 then great. It doesn't matter. It's up to you. I'm sure anything would be greatly appreciated.

Answer 11

Don't give cash, give a gift. Spend as much as you can reasonably afford, and no more.

Answer 12

Under the circumstances, give her $100.
