Best Answer To Family Question
I gave money to my father to help out a failing business. He did nothing that he told me that he was going to do. He continued to run it into the ground after we bought a machine to make parts for injection mold machines. His business rebuilt injection mold machines and he was having trouble getting parts and was losing business. He blew the money while my husband did all of the work. This was his last hope to save his company and he did nothing but run up bills and expect us to bail him out over and over. If he tried and it failed I would not have been mad but he did not do any of the things that we had discussed. Yes I regret it and we still do not talk to him. He acts like the failure was someone elses fault and not his own. We really did not know how irresponsible that he was. He had his company for years and we just thought that times were tough. We soon found out the hard way. I talked my husband into giving him this money and we are out it.

Answer 3I paid off my mom's credit card bill. When I was in college, my dad claimed me as a deduction on his taxes, even though I had claimed myself as independant, and told me he would "take the fall" if anything happened. When I went to apply for financial aid, they still wanted to see my parent's tax returns, since it was the first year I was claiming myself. I called my dad and he said "What do you want me to do about it?". I went to the financial aid office in tears, and the woman asked who I stayed with when I went home on breaks. I said I stayed with my mom. Since my mom got to deduct my brother in the divorce, I wasn't listed, so she said to just use her tax returns instead of my dad's. Even though I was able to get the financial aid, it was delayed, so I wasn't able to pay for school. My mom gave me $2,000, and said I didn't have to pay her back when my student loans came in, that it was a gift. Years down the road, my mom had to take early retirement for health reasons, and since my dad bilked her out of an additional sum on the sale of their house, she was left with next to nothing when she retired. She ended up living in subsidized housing and had a credit card bill that she could never seem to get paid off. I sent her 3 checks in the amount of $700 each written out to her credit card company and told her to make the next 3 monthly payments with them. I told her I had always wanted to repay her for her generous gift when I was in college, and asked only one condition...that she not tell a soul that I did this. I didn't want my brothers, my dad, ANYONE to know. I don't know why I was so emphatic about it, but I just didn't want anyone to know...I guess she did a private, selfless thing for me when I really needed the help, and I wanted it to be the same.
