Fish : Is It Vitally Important To Have Gravel In A Fish Tank
I'm thinking of setting up a discus tank - and I know they require absolute clean water. So in order to be very clean - I'm going to avoid gravel. What do you think of this type of set-up? ~~~ jimmy ~~~
Best Answer To Fish Question
Discus don't need gravel, and breeders almost never use it, especially in a tank with fry. It really is the best way to keep the tank clean. You may want to put a piece of dark paper on the bottom of the tank (on the outside) and maybe on the back if you don't use a tank backing. Sometimes they can be confused if they have too much blank 'space' around them. I have done it both ways, and it just depends on the fish. They really do have their own personalities! They are great fish, but require constant care. You will be rewarded for it, though, by beautiful, well adjusted fish.

Answer 1I don't know, the gravel traps a lot of the dirt, without the gravel, you will probably be cleaning it daily, the dirt won't have anywhere to hide. Try clear marbles,at least the dirt ca settle in the crevices of them and you may not have to clean it as often as without it.
Answer 2I never put gravel in a discus tank. It would make the tank much more dirty. I just filtered it and cleaned up their messes regularly and changed about 1/4 of the water per week. It worked great for me. FYI, they loved ground beef heart as their staple.
Answer 3I think your a moron. Get another hobby or a dog or something.

Answer 5The idea of a gravel-less discus tank is mainly for ease of cleaning and maintenance, and since discus are known to be more susceptible to diseases than other tropical fishes some people do recommend doing so. Personally I prefer to set them up with a fully planted tank complete with gravel and aquatic plants, which give it a more natural and pleasing appearance.
Answer 6well I know it's easier to clean those flat marbles! its sooo much easier, but you have to make sure of course that the water, bowl/tank, and marbles are clean! my fish also swam a lot more with the colors (for some reason) but they say that gravel is better for fish, because it has minerals or something that the fish needs you could ask the pet store...
Answer 7not at all! It looks better though but is harder to clean and traps algae and old food. Some fish prefere gravel and others don't mind so it may also depend on your fish
Answer 8Nope, it is not necessary to have gravel. Gravel does trap dirt, but this doesn't make your water any cleaner - in fact, it makes it dirtier because you don't realise how dirty your tank is until you actually stir up the gravel and discover how much gunk there is under there. Without gravel, you can easily see how much poop is collecting on the floor of your tank.
