Football American : Exactly HOW Important Is Height To A Quarterback
I stand at about 5"9'. I absolutly love american football and I am thinking about playing at university this year (I live in England). I dont have a big build and I dont have a huge amount of speed, but i have a good long throw that is very accurate upto 40 yards and i have a pretty good understanding of the game, being a fairly huge fan of the sport in general. Have i still got potential to play QB or will my height stop me? Its a lot different to american collegiate teams in that most of the people playing, wont no rules, plays or even positions! its not a very popular sport, but there is a fair amount of interest in it. ~~~ JoeBoy ~~~
Best Answer To Football American Question
You'll have to be able to see over the big lineman. Height isn't everything, but it helps, especially at QB. Being a QB comes from skill.... look at Doug Flutie, a pretty good QB in my book, at a legitimate height of 5'9" - same as you. Some of his lineman are up to 6'5" - 6'6". Mind you, if he had the height, he would probably be much better! But skills outweigh height. Can you pitch/hand off with perfect timing? Can you make the right decisions at the right times? Can you avoid throwing interceptions? Can you scramble from incoming linebackers? Those are very important factors. Anyways, don't let it stop you! Go for it!

Answer 1You have to be able to see over the linemen. Thos guys are huge...
Answer 2think 5'9 is too short. Jeff Garcia, a relativily short QB, is 6'1, and he is keven a bit too short. Sorry :(. Cheers!
Answer 3My brother played football and their QB was TINY - I think your skills outweigh your height unless your height somehow impacts your ability to make good decisions.
Answer 4Height definatly helps but it isn't everything. Drew Brees is only 6 foot and he is one of, if not, the best quarterbacks in the NFC. If you can move around in the pocket good enough, have good enough awareness of the field and throw amazingly, then height wouldn't stop you, at least from playing in college... the NFL might be different but first you have to prove yourself at the NCAA level.
Answer 5It's pretty damn important. otherwise, Doug Flutie might have been the greatest ever!

Answer 7you need to see number one but being tall and bulky like big ben makes it harder for you to be brought down
Answer 8Not to important if you have somebody spying on the other team
Answer 9look at doug flutie, he couldn't see over the lineman's heads. his o-line had to open up holes for him to see where his widouts were. he was a great qb no doubt about that. the only heisman winner to ever come out of bc. if you don't have good speed, you might want to try something else.
Answer 10When you're at the high school or college level, it's not TOO important. I mean, you can still be a pretty good QB. But you will have trouble seeing the entire field. I take Troy Smith of Ohio State for example. He was only 6 feet tall and he couldn't see open receivers sometimes because he couldn't see over the linebackers. So instead of throwing to them, he had to run out of the pocket and scramble. But when you get to the pros, height is very important because those linebackers are huge. That's why the ideal height for a QB is 6'5. But honestly, the mental part of being a QB is so much more important than the physical aspects.
Answer 11It's pretty standard that if you're not 6'0" or taller, you're not going to be viewed as a QB. But as far as just playing college ball, that all depends on your college. Only 5'9" though would be pretty tough to see over the big linemen. That's the thing.
Answer 12Living in England your game should be Rugby or Soccer where skill and speed matter more than bulk. I love those sexy white trousers of American Footballers...
Answer 13If you're as good as you say, then you can compete at the next level. The problem is getting on the team. Some recruiters wont even give you second look if you're not tall enough. This means you may need to send DVDs of your high lights, walk on, or maybe play for a junior college. Playing for a junior college team would be a way of getting your foot in the door, so to speak. Division I teams do a lot of recruiting at junior colleges.
