Surprisingly, bushes like Azaleas are considered evergreen too, as they hold their leaves through winter. In general evergreens like acidic soils, and the fertilizers recommended for them tend toward acidity. Evergreens are good wind shelter plantings for north and east facings of the house. Deciduous trees and shrubs are good for south and west facings, since their leaves provide shade to the house in summer (keeping the house cooler), yet fall off and allow sunshine to hit the house in winter (providing free warmth).

Evergreen trees are things like pine trees or arborvites...anything that keeps it's leaves all year long, typically trees with needles.
