Gender Womens Studies. Is Discrimination Against Women The Main Issue In This Situation.

Somebody posted this earlier: "I was reading an article yesterday where a man who taught female pupils in Iraq was murdered and his body 'quartered' by motorcycles. Sexism against women is rife in the developing world and needs to be addressed". Do you think the focus would have been different if the teacher who was murdered and mutilated was a woman? ~~~ doodlebugjim ~~~

Best Answer To Gender Womens Studies Question

Maybe the idiot who posted that actually thought that (quartering a man) was the way to liberate women in the middle east? What did the poor chap do to deserve that anyway? Believe me, quartering half the world's population will result in World War 3, only that it will be a war between genders, not countries. I'm OK with women having equal rights and powers as men, but this is atrociously ridiculous. EDIT: I apologise. I completely missed the point as I didn't read the article in question. Thank you, Eleanor B! Yes, I think the teacher would have received a whole lot more focus had she been female. In the end, discrimination against women, like Rio points out, was not the only issue, though the quote definitely seems to make it out that way.

Answer 1

No. There are many issues at play here: sexism, religious fundamentalism, violence, and international development.

Answer 2

Man Quartered by Motorcycles. Women Hardest Hit.

Answer 3

We don't let other parts of the world tell us how to run OUR country. Sooo... why should WE.....

Answer 4

That all depends on what their fear is based on exactly. It may not matter. Do you have their gripe...I know assumption and what makes most sense is today's info. Do they hate education?

Answer 5

I think the focus would have been different if this had occurred in Los Angeles instead of Iraq. During the Iraq conflict, 10,000 people in Los Angeles have been killed, the victims of terrorism. The terrorists in Los Angeles are Roman Catholics, and are citizens of the USA. Heck with the rest of the world. Let's save our own citizens here.

Answer 6

It would seem the perpetrator(s) objected to the fact that the instructor was educating females. The same fate would have resulted no matter the sex of the instructor.

Answer 7

Probably not. In some parts of the world, women are treated as less than human. But I see the wider issue here is education of women, so it would not have mattered who taught them.

Answer 8

It was very crappy of them not to say more for one of the very few men that seemed to give a crap about women.

Answer 9

My point when making that quote was to highlight the extremeness of sexist feeling against equal treatment for women - where even a 'pro-male' society will literally rip a man to pieces for the crime of educating women - I can't think of any other situation where a teacher would be so brutally murdered, can you? But to turn the question around - do you not think this man died at the hands of sexists? And do you not think we should be concerned at that sexism? I'm sure his family are. Sexism harms everybody, men included, and that's what my quote was intended to show. If you want to make this man's death into a playoff who 'who has it worse' you go for it, but I think it's a bit crass myself :-) My apologies, it appears to be Afghanistan, not Iraq. Here is the link... .nz/category/?c_id=500838ObjectID=10413099 Lol Undertaker - it's okay, I am an idiot :-P

Answer 10

That story is similar to when a male doctor is murdered at an abortion clinic by a "pro-lifer" in a bombing. In a news article about that event, a male doctor being murdered is not the "subject". A fanatic oppressing women's reproductive rights would be the subject. A male teacher being murdered and quartered by other males is not the subject of the news article you mention. Fanatics oppressing women's educational rights was the subject of the story. Comprehending the actual subject requires rational vs. magical-thinking skills.

Answer 11

Yes it would! men die all the time, normality doesn't make the news.
