Mayans are Indian people who pre-date the Hispanic influence by millenia. For those Hispanics who have and acknowledge their Indian heritage (the vast majority of western hemisphere Hispanics), rather than being ashamed of it (as taught by Spanish invaders/rulers) it is a pillar of pride in demonstrating the advanced nature of Meso-American predecessors, and what can be accomplished without European support of any kind.
