Answer 1At his best, Napoleon controlled, either directly or indirectly (through his family and friends) virtually all of Europe -- except for Britain and Portugal in the west, Switzerland in the center, and Russia in the east. Austria and Prussia were puppets at that time. And even Russia had recently been allied. His attempt to bankrupt Britain by closing the Continent to British trade (the "Continental System") was shortsighted and one of the major factors in his undoing. Spain was another blunder. He removed the relatively compliant Spanish king and replaced him with his brother, Joseph Bonaparte, outraging both Spanish pride and the very influential Catholic Church (which was upset with France's liberal religious policies). Yet another mistake was invading Russia in an attempt to force it back into the Continental System.
