Hobbies Crafts : How Much Will It Cost To Start Up A Sewing Hobby
I'd like to learn to sew very simple things. Only zippered pouches at first, and maybe a few years from now, I'll sew simple apparel for my child. I basically want to start with the bare minimum needed to start a sewing hobby. I'm willing to buy a used sewing machine and not so expensive fabric. Can you give an estimate of how much it will cost me to get started? ~~~ mangofanatic ~~~

Kacky is absolutely right. Don't start with something with a zipper. I've been sewing for over 40 years and I still hate putting in zippers. And, if at all possible, get a new sewing machine. There are several decent ones that sell for less than $100. Here's a website with some great tips for beginning sewers: Look down under the heading "Start Simple" and you'll find links to several projects for beginners that won't require you to purchase a pattern. The basic things youa€™ll need are: Fabric Thread (black, white, beige, and colors that match the fabric you purchase) Scissors Marking device (chalk pencil, chalk wedge, tracing wheel with tracing paper, or disappearing in pen) Measuring tape - flexible Pins Seam ripper Machine needles Hand needles Pin cushion Bobbins (Your machine may come with several bobbins, but getting a few spare bobbins (they are very cheap) will allow you to keep a fully threaded bobbin with it's matching spool of thread. This is a huge time saver. Bobbin sizes and shapes are very specific to the machine, so if you didn't keep the machine instructions, bring one of the bobbins with you to the store for an exact match) You can buy kits that contain most of those things for less than $20, such as this one: /joann/?CATID=PRODID=xprd636143source=search Or this one: /joann/?CATID=cat3430PRODID=prd34631source=search The tiny spools of thead that come with those won't hold enough thread to be much good for anything other than mending or hand sewing a hem, though.

Answer 1$1 shop the Dollar Store
Answer 2Zippered pouches are not the easiest. You'll want to wait before tackling zippers. If you buy a used machine, buy it from a repair person so you know it has had its annual tuneup and cleaning. Or get a new one for about $ from Wal Mart. Find a friend to show you how to use the machine. Use only 2 colors of thread - cream or black, unless you want to topstitch. Get a pair of $ scissors that will only be used for fabric. Get a seam ripper and some straight pins, and a couple of hand sewing needles. Choose an easy $ pattern from the fabric store. They are labeled. Get your sewing friend to show you how to use the pattern, or try these videos . .

Answer 4Check at Walmarts. They usually have some of the sewing supplies in a packet for less than $ a Necessary notions pack. They will have like a seam ripper, tape measure, straight pins, nippers, a seam Gage ruler, pin cushion, needle threader and cutter in the packs. Thread black and white is like 5 spools for a dollar. And the cheapest material they carry is a dollar a yard. Or they have a remnants (small pieces of yard goods left over from bolts of fabric). Sewing machine needles are less than $ a pack. Hand sewing needles I usually pay 50 cents a pack. And a strong magnet to pick up straight pins is good to have but not necessary. They also sell easy to sew patterns for less than $ a pattern. And a really good pair of scissors too. To start with you could just use any pair you have at home and buy a good pair at a later time. If you buy a new sewing machine they sometimes come with some of your sewing supplies too. If used you will probably need to buy the above things. It will depend on the person selling the machines. You can also buy small supplies at a dollar store too. But, I know our Dollar Tree store usually sell things for a dollar a piece. Since you are just starting to learn to sew you may want to check out this web page. Hope this has helped you out.
