Horse Racing. Can A Racehorse Recover From A Fractured Tibia.

I want to adopt a retired racehorse, who is currently on stall rest for a fractured tibia. She fractured the left tibia 2 years ago, and healed sound, but now has fractured the right somehow. She is well cared for, and will complete her stall rest and turnout in a small field. What are some opinions on her future? I will not breed her, or show her, she will only be for pleasure and light trail riding. ~~~ JL ~~~

Well the reason she hurt the other one,, was that the first one was not healed ,, They will carry weight on the good leg there fore they break down on the GOOD LEG,, But if you give her enough time like 1 yr resting in a very small area ok They are Splint bones which carry the weight from the knee, or are you talking about the cannon hind leg ? Many can get confused ,, It is called many other things . A good blister will help time or they can remove them (splints )Hind leg Not splints)... but cannon is not good at all Why not ask the vet who cared for her when she got hurt the first time!! I think that wise,, and also get more ex rays of her,, What is a tibia in your eyes ? Compared to the horse's ? may be we are talking a completely different bone here? Get the same Vets opinion,, and get new x-rays ,, I would not ask on here!!! you need a vet to answer this ,, Not us laymen ,,,, good luck I hope it is the tibia as you call it ,,! Splints are fine but cannons are not ,, OR other bigger bones in the legs of horses./// Please edit more Thanks So help us out here to what is the bone she fractured//?? And hind legs are the worst , only because if you ride right, they need the hind end to help carry them selves right ,,So not all the weight is one the front end ,, Edit more please Only because everyone can get the name wrong and or Get the wrong opinion ,,Thanks

Answer 1

Obviously, since she recovered from the left fracture, she could recover from the right. The variables are the kind, size, severity, and location of the fracture. Without knowing that, I really can't venture a guess. I assume she got the first fracture racingj? How did she get the second? I would have some concerns that she has weak bone structure for some reason, perhaps heredity, perhaps early feed. If she went back to racing and got it, that's one thing; if she tripped over her shadow and landed funny, that's another! For the future, pleasure and light trail sound ideal IF she has the temperament for it (some OTTBs just don't) and if she doesn't have a bone weakness problem.

Answer 2

Sure she can if it's not a bad fracture. I am assuming it is not a bad fracture. She recovered before. She can make a good horse for what you will be doing with her. If handled properly. Don't rush her. Rest is Best.
