Horses. What Coloured Foal Will Result From 2 Choc Taffy Parents.

Hi,I have a small miniature pony stud,my stallion is a solid chocolate with a silver mane and tail and I have a mare whom is the same colour however she has dapples through her coat. I have been breeding for many years but this is my first taffy to taffy mating and was wondering what the expected colour of the foal might be. Maybe a question for those who have foals from taffy parents. All answers much appreciated, thanks. ~~~ kson ~~~

Best Answer To Horses Question

If your two horses are heterozygous for the taffy/silver dapple gene you will have 75% chance of a foal carrying the taffy gene(50% heterozygous / 25% homozygous). If the two are heterozygous for black then you have a 25% chance of a chestnut foal. so with all genes heterozygous you get Black taffy % black % chestnut with hidden taffy gene % chestnut with no taffy gene % If either parent is homozgous for black the foal's base coat colour will be black. If either parent is homozygous for taffy the foal will have at least one taffy gene and this will show so long as the foal has not got a chestnut base colour.

Answer 1

I don't think it will turn choc taffy. I mean I don't have minis yet. But I think it depends on the mare and stallion's history. Like I have a draft (I know far off from minis) his mom is a palimino draft and his dad is a paint/draft and he turned out sorrel. But I am not sure.

Answer 2

Well the main colour genes for the foal will most likely be a taffy choc colour just like both of his parents, though because a horse has so many colour genes in it (even though it my only appear to have 1,2 or 3 colours) The foal could come out in almost ANY colour, which I find the most fun about breeding.

Answer 3

You have a couple possibilities depending on what genes your horses may be hiding. When breeding two Black Silvers (silver is the gene that causes the dilution; what you call taffy), you have a good chance of getting a foal of the same color. If one of those horses is homozygous for black and silver, you'll be guaranteed a Black Silver foal. If not, you have a chance of getting a black foal as well. However, if both horses happen to carry the chestnut gene, you could possibly end up with a chestnut foal (silver doesn't affect chestnut horses so that foal can still carry the gene but it won't exhibit it.) So basically, your most likely results (without knowing the horses' exact genotype) will be either black silver or black. Assuming they're not hiding any genes, I believe you have a 75% chance of getting a foal the same color as them.

Answer 4

probably the same color as its parents.

Answer 5

it will be choc. taffy because that is a form of palomino, and a palomino to a palomino will be a 100% palomino. what a cool color!

Answer 6

The breeding no matter what, depends not just on the parents, but the grandparents, and g-grandparents. Make certain you know what their coloring is as well, because the possibilities of dominant and recessive genes is what determines the coloring. Lets say your parents are Ab and Ab and the grand parents are Ab, BB, bb, Ab. You will see that there is an opportunity there for the offspring to be bb, or Ab, because the recessive gene b is now dominant. By studying the family history of the parents and grandparents, you can figure your foals coloring chances. wow... whoever said I gave a bad answer...sorry as a science TEACHER ..I was trying to simplify as best I could. Bummer. However selective breeding does involve not just the parents but the grandparents as well... and that must be considered. That is why we got a coal black foal from two sorrels last year. The unknown quantity was the sire's parentage... which apparently included at least one black. The mare's side did have a bay and black and we hoped to have a sorrel or bay foal. Were we surprised. You cannot just rely on the parents alone. Sorry if my answer was not good enough for you. btw, for those that are not of the scienitific bent.. Homozygous: Possessing two identical forms of a particular gene, one inherited from each parent.

Answer 7

Well, depending on what "chocolate taffy" actually is as a color, it depends. That color is not a specific gene, so if it is a "silver" like delta dawn described, she is correct on what colors your could get. But if they are actually liver chestnut or a chocolate palomino, then you will end up with different results. If they are both actually liver chestnut, your baby can only be a chestnut, more than likely the liver color like the parents, but it could be more red. If they are chocolate palomino, you could get palomino(the actual shade is not predictable), chestnut or cremello. You should educate yourself on the correct color terminology, as "taffy" is not a defined color in the horse color pallette, it seems more a word certain breeds use to describe a color much like QH, Paint and other stock breeds define sorrel as different from chestnut when they are the same color genetically. Are the horses chestnut or palomino or a silver diluted color? Horses are either red with or without agouti or black, and there are many modifiers that can modify the colors to produce the many colors that horses can be. Examples of modifiers are grey, cream, silver, roan. Most people who will know about color genetics can tell you your basic chances of getting certain colors but we have to know the real color of the animals involved.

Answer 8

You have a 75 % chance of getting taffy from two taffy parents. Rest assured that "taffy" is a legitimate color term, a dilution of black pigment in the coat. Since taffy is dominant, if either the mare or stallion has two taffy parents, your foal will be taffy.
