I have recieved an offer from RHD to purchase my number, but I believe that their amount is unacceptable for all the inconvenience I am enduring. It is listed in 6 seperate phone books in my area. ~~~ lizzye360 ~~~

Answer 1contact yellow pages and get them to correct their mistake. also, if you have an answering machine put a message on there to tell the caller it is a private residence not a business.:)
Answer 2While lily is correct, and the phone book publishers will work to correct their error, the sad fact is that the books are already published and distributed. There is, in effect, no way to un-do the problem. Unfortunately, any of the other parties involved can make taking legal action a big headache. Because it is a residential number, you can't really claim business losses. So proving substantial injury may be challenging. Rather than taking action you may want to just try making a counter offer. Be polite and friendly, but not a push over. They want the number for the same reason the publishers can't change it... it is already listed in the phone book, and they are missing sales when folks can't get through. A more aggressive option would be to suggest that you may divert their customers to a competitor, but be ready to play some unfriendly hard ball if you do that. (Keep in mind, that it is your number, you are under no obligation to tell people who call you anything, or not tell them anything, or you can be friendly and tell them where they can go for the service they want even if it isn't the company listed in the phone book with your number. I wouldna€™t lie, but you certainly can say "I hear so and so is good") But again, I would not go the aggressive route at first, or perhaps at all if you dona€™t want some unfriendly conversations. Answer 3phone numbers are the property of the phone company, you do not have the right to sell your phone number.... several years ago someone had up on ebay the phone number from that song jenny 867-5309, it was quickly shut down by the phone company, as it is not your property to sell.... what you can do is call your local phone company and have your number changed, they should do so free of charge because of the situation you are in.. you may need to provide them with proof of your claim... other then that the yellow pages is a print publication that has been distributed already, so if you dont change your number, your stuck dealing with the calls.. and sometimes people keep the older books, so this may continue after the next issue is printed....
