I have bought two cordless phones in the past year and both have quit working. I have never had this problem before. I have owned other cordless phones that have lasted years. Is there a particular brand that lasts for at least a couple years?

Uniden. Sony's are good too, but Uniden's are the best. I have had a Uniden, Sony, and Vtech, and I must say that the Uniden is the best.
I also recommend NiMH batteries over the NiCd, because they last longer; I mean both in Capacity, talk-time, and Longitivity.

I have a panasonic, which is working for 4 years already. I had to replace the battery two years ago, but other than that it's fine.

I'm assuming you mean cordless phones for the house.
I'm rather partial to Panasonic, or Siemens. Siemens costs more but the quality is unsurpassed.
