Movies : When And Why Did Films Start Putting The Credits At The End
I've been watching some old movies lately, like from the 1950's and 1960's, and they all have the credits at the beginning of the film, instead of the end. Why the switch to put them at the end? When did this start happening? Would you prefer them better at the start or at the end? ~~~ elfgurl ~~~
Best Answer To Movies Question
The first film to feature a cast list at the end was James Whale's Frankenstein (1931). In the beginning credits The Creature is listed as being played by ? so of course they needed a way to make sure Boris Karloff got credited for his performance. The second credit list had the heading "A good cast is worth repeating". I think it became more common place as credits got longer and studios started to worry that people would loose interest before the film started. I also think people want to see the credits after a film so they can think "what's that actor's name?" or "I wonder who did the costumes?" etc and get an answer. I personally prefer credits at the end for the reasons I have suggested above.

Answer 1i have no idea when that happened...why they chose to do it...but man i'm glad.....
Answer 2I guess people just want to get the movie started. Another reason is that in the older movies they didn't list every single person who walked on set, like they do nowadays. It seems if you were even remotely in the vicinity as the movie was being made they're going to throw your name in on the credits.
Answer 3I'm not exactly sure when they started doing it, but I believe it was in the early 70's. The reason is pretty simple. The were tired of having ridiculously long intros. As the industry grew, it took a lot more to get the movie made, and a lot more people were involved. This only made the credits longer. Some films still have credits at the beginning, but only the most notable ones (stars, directors, producers, writers, etc.). Personally, I prefer having them at the end. That way if you are watching a movie and you like a certain actor/actress and you don't know the person you can wait and see who it is.
