I live in Wellington (which is in the North Island, by the way.) Rent a campervan and "do it yourself". There are plenty of places to go in both islands, but 3 weeks isn't long enough to see everything. Check out this website and pick out the things that interest you, and plan accordingly. Top picks: Bay of Islands, Rotorua, Taupo, Wellington, Nelson area, Kaikoura and Queenstown. But there's lots more!

Answer 2I went there not long ago... I highly suggest the "bay of islands" on the northern part of the north island. Not sure if you enjoy it but, there is a water park in auckland that is comprised of all hot springs water....very very fun...however smells like sulphur but u get used to it. I would also suggest Dunedin and Wellington on the south island just to say 'i did it' Take care have fun
