The Austrian version of German, close to Bavarian. And that is the ONLY language spoken there! I lived there for 6 years.

Pretty strong Greman accent though not as strong as it used to be. It is a good question -- it wouldn't surprise me if someone said Austrian! It is very culturally tied to Germany. This is one reason the world didn't flinch much when Hitler took it over in 1938 -- they figured it was German anyway. I am guessing it is not part of Germany in that it was part of the Austria-Hungary Empire for many years. Germany was not a country until 1868. In fact many hundred years ago the term "German" was consisdered an insult. This is according to history teachers I have had.
