Great question. I was lucky to have been born into a racing family. You need some technical knowledge and a basic understanding of vehicle dynamics. A basic auto shop class in high school is helpful the rest can be learned in engineering classes in college and practical experience. For driving you need to be physically fit and a woman has to have continuing weight training for upper body strength. Driving also requires a very competitive attitude and the ability to make advancements at other peoples expense. I don't mean wrecking people but a good driver will push her way in even if it slows the progress or causes a good friend to lose positions or races. A good driver isn't always the most popular person especially if she is a woman. You also have to have the ability, if you are successful, to live with being refered to as a bi#tch every weekend.

Answer 2To the person above, I race, and I'm not totally physically fit. Of course you need knowledge, but you really don't need to go to school for it. I'm only 16, and just from being at the track, racing, and talking with people I've learned a lot. You do need to get in your 'zone' on race days and focuse if you want to be in the winners circle. It's never too late to get into racing, I started racing junior dragster when I was 13, 5 years after I could have started. So you really just have to have the want to compete and win in the sport of racing.
Answer 3I think ou sell yourself short calling yourself "average" but here is my answer. You will need to have some aptitude about motorized vehicles beyond the basics. You will need to develop both physical and mental strength-especially if you are a woman because everything you do will be more magnified that a male driver's actions-and you will need to develop driving skills. I would type the words "racing schools" and "karting" or "go karts" into a search engine and find an organization and/or a racing school to help you learn your craft firsthand. If you wanted to be a race car driver you can't think like a woman, and you would have to be in good physical shape.
