I just did this type of letter, and brought in 57 material prize donations, and another 1200 in cash donations (our goal was $1000). I started with the Dear (Merchant's name), and then followed it with a description of the group that the event would benefit. I followed it with a request for either a prize request for a donation or a cash donation. Then I followed it with how we would thank them and get their name out there so that people would know who contributed and who to patron. Make sure you follow up with a thank you letter!
