Other Germany. I Am Taking A 3 Week Trip To Germany And Am Looking For Interesting Places To Go.

I am renting a car in Frankfurt and plan on driving south to Switzerland, then east through the mountains to Austria and then north to Berlin. I was wondering what are the good cities to see and what attractions I should visit while there. ~~~ Kyle R ~~~

You should definitely stop in Tirol Austria (Innsbruck) where they have the Swarovsky crystal factory over looking the mountains, the hotel where Mozart performed when he was a child, places Mozart visited and played. There's a really nice palace where you can learn about the Austrian's reign and learn about Cici(Elizabeth). Munchen is also a nice area, lots of history, museums, great skiing areas not too far from there, the olympic arena, place Oktoberfest takes place, great markets for christmas shopping. Europe is nice, bring a guide book, learn the basic of the languages, and don't be afraid to ask the locals about their history, customs, and questions that will get them talking. Nurnberg, Germany is also very nice. Nurnberg has a really nice shopping area, great christmas markets, american eateries like chinese food, pizza hut etc. Prague is beautiful, you will walk where they filmed Mission Impossible and other movies, walk the Charles bridge, and shop for in Czech is Karlovy Vary where you will find the hotel Pup where they filmed Casino Royale, the healing springs where you can sample waters which cure different ailments. In Switzerland you can rent your own cow and get the cheese from that cow before leaving. Whatever and wherever you end up simply enjoy the experience and hold on to your wallet.

Answer 1

Your plan is what I was going to recommend. Do not skip Switzerland.

Answer 2

I am not sure about the geography of Germany, but years ago I went to Munich. They have an incredible Science and Industry Museum there.

Answer 3

I'd recommend getting the newest Lonely Planet guidebooks for those areas, though 3 weeks seems a short time to cover so much ground! Make sure to check for closed days, and early closing hours.

Answer 4

Don't forget to take a day trip to Heidelberg. It's a great university city on the river with loads of history. Too much to see in one day so check out Lonely Planet to find your interests. Ian M

Answer 5

Austria-Berlin will lead you through the Czech Republic. Prague is beautiful and Dresden and the Spreewald area are really worth a visit. Just one tip: Confirm with your car rental agency whether you will be allowed to take the car outside of Germany and if yes, to which countries. /en/Spreewald /en/Dresden / BTW, I consider Heidelberg to be overrated. Its popularity mainly stems from being only an hour's drive to the north of Frankfurt, making it an easy destination for business travellers who are in Frankfurt for a trade fair. IMO Rothenburg ob der Tauber or Quedlinburg would make more interesting destinations while offering similar scenery.

You need to stop for a while in Frankfurt too, it's a nice city. So Switzerland (Zurich, Bern, Geneva), Austria (Vienna, Innsbruck, Salzburg), Germany Berlin, Munich, Hamburg. I hope you can see everything what you want, the best is you look in some book, where you want to stop and what you want to see. All 3 countries are very beautiful, and I hope you are having enough time in this 3 weeks you can see some of important stuff there. Have fun and good trip.

Answer 9

From the route you plan to take, you have an endless number of wonderful towns, cities and attractions to choose from. But, if you are heading south into Switzerland, make sure you at least stop in Lucerne and from there you could head east into Austria to stop in Innsbruck, Salzburg (the old town, don't miss it) and Vienna. Then from Vienna you could drive up into Bavaria (Passau, Regensburg, Nuremberg, Bamberg etc). Really, there are so many wonderful places to see. You just need to get yourself a good book (Lonely Planet guide to Switzerland, Germany etc are great). Then you need to work out which castles, fortresses, mountains, views and other attractions interest you the most. Some of my favourites places to see... Switzerland...Bern, Lucerne, Mt Pilatus, Chateau Chillon, Zermatt etc. Austria...Salzburg, Vienna etc. Germany...Munich, Wurzburg, Bamberg, the 12th century walled town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Heidelberg, Lubeck etc. good luck have fun...

Answer 10

I would recommend Trier, their are many structures from the Roman Empire. Deffinately a day in the Black Forest, Freiburg is a cool city, maybe a stop by Lake Constance. In Switzerland, I would recommend Lucerne, Haven't been there, but it looks beautiful. I would actually recommend taking the train. It gives you time to look at the scenery and you don't have to worry about the street signs. Also the trains stop almost everywhere at least 2x a day.
