Other Home Garden : When Does Lock Up Occur When Building A House And What Is Involved
When a house is being built, it gets to a point which is referred to as "lock up" when the house is pretty much completely built (I think) and it can be locked up and people can't walk through the house. I would like to know what stage of completion is "lock up". Its a building industry term. Re: narlyknot response - there is no scam. I am in Australia. ~~~ Deanna ~~~

As an owner builder in NSW, Australia, my house is currently to "lock up". A house is to "lock up" when the frame and trusses have been completed, the exterior walls are up, windows and doors are fitted and roof has been completed. Literally when you can lock the house up and no-one can enter from any given point . through the roof, windows or doorways. This is officially the stage called or known as "lock-up". No internals . gyprocking, fitting out etc. are necessary at this stage. It is also the stage where you contact your local council to do a 'lock-up' inspection. (some financial institutions will refinance a mortgage once a house is to lock up but you must do your homework, as many won't either.) If I knew which country you were in I could refer you to a company who gives advice on different stages on building. In Australia, one such company is called Build Safe Insurance (no I am not plugging them, but they provide construction insurance and owner-builder courses etc). They will also send you info that you need to build a home. They are located in Seaford Victoria. You can also look them up on the net, they will answer most emails. Yes, there is a stage called "lock - up".

Answer 3HI there My house is currently under construction too, and there is the term lock up. I would like to know what that stage is too. My house currently has doors to all entrances, and they are locked, so I think that is lock up. I have all the jip rock done, skirting and cornices, (sorry about my spelling), my cupboards are in, light fittings and switches are in, what is next, and what do i have to go? I am in SA.
