Contact the local; don't take anybody's word but theirs. Depends if you're a pre-Apprentice, Apprentice, or Journeyman and the CBA between the Union Contractors. The UA (plumbers pipefitters) would have several wage scales - fitters take on a lot more risk by being out on industrial sites. By becoming a pipeliner, aren't you limiting yourself to pipeline work? A welding helper sounds like you're just doing the set up work for the welder, why not become an Apprentice and learn to do the welding? It's limiting, IBB Apprentices are trained in welding, rigging, blueprints, etc.
