I run these games ... and despite my ancience of years, have not been beaten in the last 18 months of playing them. In fact, when i get time, I plan to make a proper entry on this very topic into the online Wikipedia. Years ago the wall downball game was easily the more popular, and I became President of the Vic Wall handball association. I believe the game you are talking about is often known by various names: 4 square, downball, handball, etc. If you look it up via Google on 'Wikipedia', you'll see its known by many names in different countries. It is probably one of the simplest games on earth. If you are only playing it between 2 of you, then you have 2 "squares" joined by a common line across the centre of the 2 adjoining squares. One of you starts play by bouncing the ball so that it bounces on your own side just once first and then will bounce inside your opponent's square. Following your serve, each of you then hits the ball back and forth to the other, using the exact same rules that it must bounce on both sides. However, on each hit of the ball, the person who is receiving the ball at that moment does not have to wait until the ball bounces on his/her side if they don't want to. You can play the ball before it lands down on your own side, BUT when you hit it back, you must hit it so that it bounces on your own side first before it passes across the midline [or imaginery net] that separates your side of the court from your opponent's side. So every time it is hit, it must bounce into your own square first. This applies whether you are playing between only 2 of you, or whether you are playing 4 square, or any other number of players. It must land in your own square first when you've hit it. The other most important point is: When a player has hit it into your square, you must play it successfully before it bounces twice. So this means, you can only play it either: before it actually bounces into your court, or after it has bounced only once on your side. So this is the basic game. From there, different groups of kids play all sorts of added little ideas, or bits and pieces. You have to find out by playing with them how the locals have added bits to their own rules. Many of them play the rule that any hit where the ball hits ANY of the lines is called, "a liner", and they simply replay the point - no one loses ... it is just replayed. As for names of hits, Here in Victoria, they don't actually use many names for what you might think are different kinds of shots. But there is one play that is often called, "the sweeper" - that's the 'skimmer' that is a fast and very low ball, not much off the ground at all; it almost 'sweeps' the ground. We don't know of any other names for particular plays.

Answer 1In NSW it is called handball because it is used with the hand and what you do is have two people stand opposite each other a fair distance apart and you bounce the ball in the middle of the two of you. Once the ball is bouncing you need to hit it back to each other with your hand making sure it bounces once every time in between the two of you. Preferrably in the middle from where you two are standing. Have fun. Its a great game to past time.

You fly through the kitchen with a hasty good morning, grab your cup of coffee and bark at your 3 year old who is reaching for your arms with oatmeal covered fingers. She cries, your wife snaps and out the door you run to join the safari just as the sun is rising.
