Well, the poem is saying that a soldier gets nothing from tomorrow, because he is fighting with his life for today. When a soldier starts to fight he doesn't dream of tomorrow and all that can be, but all that was. He dreams of what he used to do, and how normal life was. The second stanza is the narrator talking about how these soldiers are fighting, and how they are day dreaming about the things that were boring before; even the things they didn't like before. All the things they took for granted. They aren't things you normally day dream about, but because they are at war, even those things seem great. War causes their day dreams to become very modest. They just want to return to all the good and bad of life away from war, whereas a person not fighting in war would day dream of fame, fortune, or finding some ultimate love and such. The horror of the conditions of war change everything about a person, even something such as daydreams. You can go even deeper by pointing out that a daydream like this can taunt a soldier, because he realizes how wonderful what he had was, and that he may never get that back, whereas normally, a daydream makes a person feel better. Basically, it is about how war changes everything, and daydreams become more like memories of the past than visions of the future, and that what we have is a dazzling portrait of happiness compared to the bleak darkness of war.
