Pregnancy : What Are The Chances Of Having A Late Term Stillbirth
I am currently 36 weeks pregnant and although I have no reason to be concerned, so far things have been fine, all I do is worry that he/she will die. My friends lost their baby at 33 weeks, they don't know why, and ever since then i've been a nervous wreck. I feel like i've been in panic mode for months. I do my kick counts, but it just doesn't put my mind at ease. Does anyone know what the statistics say about the odds of a stillbirth this late in pregnancy? ~~~ frittyfrats ~~~
Best Answer To Pregnancy Question
It happened to me at 40 weeks. The doctors have never been able to give me a reason either, but I have done alot of research on this, and I can tell you that the rate of stillbirths is 1/120 births. It's not as uncommon as people think, since noone really talks about it. What bothered me alot when it happened to me was that through all my reading and prenatal classes, visits to the doctors was that it was never brought to my attention that it was even a possibility. And I felt really cheated that I wasn't even aware there was a danger. There is really nothing more that you can do other than staying vigilant, and theres no need to panic. Just be aware of your body and keep up with the kick counts, and DO NOT be shy to call the doctor if you are concerned. At this point, you could be going into labour anytime, so pay close attention that your water hasn't broken, sometimes it can leak slowly, and it's a very easy test at the hospital to determine. at your doctor visits, be sure that your blood pressure and urine checks out okay and report to the doctor if you have any headaches or vision changes. It's normal to be nervous, but don't let it ruin your last weeks. This is a very special time and as long as you are vigilant that's all it's within your power to do.

Answer 1I would put your mind at ease all this is causing stress for you and your baby. My condolences for the family who lost their baby. All this is for your doctor to answer.
Answer 2I don't know the exact percentage but I do know that it's very rare. Especially because you've had a very healthy pregnancy thus far. I gave birth at 25 weeks and after a long hospital stay, my baby is home and thriving. Don't worry you'll just drive yourself nuts.
Answer 3I am 34 weeks and feel the exact same way ever since about 23 weeks...even though I KNOW my baby is healthy and growing in me, i am still so afarid of something bad happening. and it may be irrational, but it has to do with the fact that stillborns do happen, in rare cases cause unknown. my uncle's wife got into a huge car wreck (the car flipped over) and lost her baby boy. she was 9 months pregnant. but the odds of a stillbirth are extremely rare at our stage. our babies if born now would more likle ygo home right away though theyre not full-term. I think just try to have faith in your little one that he/she is healthy thriving and going to make it. stillbirths usualyl happen (in the uncommon case they do) at late term when a baby has some congenital disease like trisomy 18 or soemthing else. but not a healthy growing baby unless there was a catsrophic accident like a car/bus wreck or severe fall froma building or during delivery if the cord gets wrapped but usally in hospitals doctors can prevent that during delivery as baby is monitored closely.
