Best Answer To Safety Question
I try to apply the 4 second rule at higher speeds - since cars require greater stopping distance at greater speed. A rule of thumb is that as you double your speed, you quadruple your stopping distance, so even though 2 seconds at 70 increases your gap over 2 seconds at 45, it may not be enough. Mike has a great point on poor weather conditions also - where stopping distance is also greatly increased. But mostly, I apply this when riding my motorcycle, which requires greater stopping distance and reaction time/avoidance planning than with a car.

Answer 5The four second rule comes in to play under adverse weather conditions. For instance if your driving down the road and the road become slippery first off you need to be slowed down in the first place you need to be four seconds behind the vehicle in front of you. Theory and driving there are so many varibles expirence is the best tool.
