Okay, this IS a serious question Years ago my pa rescued a dog he found near Tembisa township that was all skeletal and mangey. After care and feeding the dog grew fine and healthy. The old boere Oom who lived next door told us that the dog was a ridgeback without a ridge, a throwback to the original dog that the English mastif was bred with to produce the Rhodesian. Does anyone know what the name of this original dog might be? ~~~ Commander MJ ~~~

History The only breed that originated in South Africa, the Rhodesian Ridgeback descends most likely from the Saluki and the Pharaoh Hound, and possibly the Hottentot Dog which is extinct. Writings from Southern Africa dated prior to 1505 describe the dogs as being extremely courageous and fiercely devoted to their masters. In the late 1800's, a big game hunter from South Africa named Van Rooyen, decided to cross the breed with other dogs in order to impart certain attributes needed in a lion-hunting dog. To their natural speed, he added the scenting ability of the Pointer, the endurance of the Collie, the agility of the Terrier and the biting ability of the Great Dane. Once complete, the Ridgeback was the fearless enemy of the "king of beasts", the African Lion. The breed was standardised and registered in 1924, and breeders today claim that the dogs still maintain the inherent antagonism towards lions.

Answer 12I heard the same story before but it happened in Capetown, i have no idea where Tembisa township is. I am going to look this up and hopefully will find an answer. I have a Ridgeback and love her to bits. From what i can gather the Khoi-khoi had hunting dogs with ridges and they were used for breeding with [ the dogs ] not the Khoi:)
