Anxious to go back to New Hampshire and explore more of the mountain area I loved so much. I am wondering if it'll be too cold in May? I went in late-fall last time and it was surprisingly pleasant weather.

There may still be some snow on the trails at higher elevations where the trail is protected by shade, especially early in the month.
If you are at higher elevations bring a sweater and clothing .
the beginning of the month is likely to be too early but the leaves come out around the middle of the month by the end it should be nice except for exposed elevations over 4000 feet.
